Weekend Reading: Frank Ocean On the Magic in Truth, Honesty, and Openness

Frank Ocean had a pretty big summer.

Not only did the 25-year-old singer-songwriter (who’s penned tunes for stars like Justin Bieber, John Legend, and Brandy) release his own debut album, but he also went public with his sexual oritentation in an open letter posted to his Tumblr account.

The poignantly written entry takes us back several years ago to when Ocean was 19 and in love for the first time in his life, and with a man.

The Web – social media accounts like Twitter and Facebook, especially – were on fire for some time, and for the most part Ocean received rabid support from his record label, fans, and fellow artists.

Beyonce, with whom Ocean worked on “I Miss You,” even created a little piece of art for him.

Now, in what Huffington Post speculates might be his most revealing interview since his Tumblr post, Ocean opens up about how his decision affected him on the other side of the computer screen.

The night I posted it, I cried like a f—— baby. It was like all the frequency just clicked to a change in my head. All the receptors were now receiving a different signal, and I was happy. I hadn’t been happy in so long. I’ve been sad again since, but it’s a totally different take on sad. There’s just some magic in truth and honesty and openness.

Head on over to GQ‘s Ocean-ography for the full piece.
