Showtime's hit drama "Homeland" reached a series high Sunday night, surpassing the veteran Showtime series "Dexter," the network said Tuesday.

Sunday's 10 p.m. airing of "Homeland" pulled in 2.2 million total viewers, making it the most-watched episode of the series, which is currently winding down its second season. By comparison, "Dexter" pulled in 2.1 million total viewers with its 9 p.m. airing.
This marks the first time that "Homeland" has beaten "Dexter," currently in its seventh season, in ratings.

For the night overall, with encore airings taken into account, "Dexter" edged out "Homeland" -- which stars Claire Danes as CIA officer Carrie Mathison -- with 2.63 million total viewers versus 2.5 million for "Homeland."
Both series will air their season finales Dec. 16.
