The fate of two fowls, locked in a heated race for survival, rests in the hands of the American people.
Each year, the president pardons a single turkey for Thanksgiving. This year, President Barack Obama turned to his more than 1.5 million Facebook fans to decide which bird to spare.
Cobbler and Gobbler, two white-feathered, nearly identical turkeys, were born on the same day on a farm in Rockingham County, Va.
Cobbler, whose slightly more orange-colored beak and self-assured posture seems to have wooed voters, was in the lead by a few hundred Facebook likes at about 8 p.m. ET Tuesday, when polls closed.
"Cobbler craves cranberries, is known for his strut, and enjoys the musical stylings of Carly Simon," White House spokeswoman Erin Lindsay wrote in a blog post on the president's official site. "Gobbler, a patient but proud bird, loves to nibble on corn and enjoys any music with a fiddle."
