Dane Cook Apologizes for 'Dark Knight Rises' Shooting Joke

Dane Cook has pulled his foot out of his mouth long enough to apologize for an ill-conceived joke about last week's shooting spree at an Aurora, Colo., screening of "The Dark Knight Rises."

Responding to the outrage over his wisecrack about the tragedy, Cook offered a mea culpa on his Twitter account Friday, saying that he was "devastated" by the shooting and that he was guilty of "bad judgment" in making the joke.

"I am devastated by the recent tragedy in Colorado & did not mean to make light of what happened. I made a bad judgment call with my material last night & regret making a joke at such a sensitive time," Cook wrote. "My heart goes out to all of the families & friends of the victims."

Cook made the joke while appearing at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood on Thursday night, suggesting that "The Dark Knight Rises" was so bad that the victims were likely hoping to be killed anyway.

"This movie is pretty much a piece of crap," Cook opined before launching into his joke. "I know that if none of that would have happened, pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, was probably like, 'Ugh, fucking shoot me.'"

The joke was met with a mixture and groans and laughter at the club, and sparked anger across the Internet.

Cook's comment came almost a week to the day after a gunman killed 12 and injured dozens of others at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises."
